SUMMARY:Rediscovering Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Tchaikovsky has been a favorite of concert-goers and orchestra musicians for well over a century. Tonight we reach beyond the Nutcracker and other expected favorites to explore some of Tchaikovsky’s lesser-known masterworks. Longtime friend and soloist with the SLS\, Andrew Staupe\, returns to present the brilliant Concert Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra. The orchestra will also perform Dr. Baldwin’s favorite early work by the composer\, the Symphony No. 1\, “Winter Daydreams.” You’ll be whistling some new tunes and perhaps discover new favorite works by the celebrated Russian composer after this memorable concert. \n\n\n\nProgram: \n\n\n\n\nPeter Tchaikovsky: Polonaise from “Eugene Onegin”\n\n\n\nPeter Tchaikovsky: Concert Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra in G major\, op. 56\n\n\n\nPeter Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 1 in G minor\, op. 13 “Winter Daydreams”

SUMMARY:50 Years and Counting: Celebrate a Half-Century with the SLS!
DESCRIPTION:SLS is pleased to present a pre-concert lecture at 6:15 pm before the concert in room 270. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate 50 years of music-making! In 1976\, a group of musicians assembled for the first time\, under the direction of Jay Welch to simply “read though some music.” Little did they know that that meeting laid the foundation for one of the finest community orchestras in the nation! We celebrate the start of our 50th season with an overture composed specifically for the occasion by Utah composer\, Andrew Maxfield. The orchestral showcase continues with two favorites suggested by the orchestra players\, Gershwin’s tuneful An American in Paris\, and Saint-Saëns powerful Symphony No. 3\, also known as the “Organ Symphony.” Local organist\, David Fox\, joins us from the bench of the Lively-Fulcher organ to open the season with wave after wave of glorious sound! \n\n\n\nProgram: \n\n\n\n\nAndrew Maxfield: World Premiere (commissioned to celebrate SLS’s 50th)\n\n\n\nGeorge Gershwin: An American in Paris\n\n\n\nCamille Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C Minor\, op. 78 “Organ Symphony”

SUMMARY:Sound and Silence
DESCRIPTION:Our final concert is an exploration of sound and silence. Our friend Phillip Bimstein will host the evening\, and our very own Charlotte Bell will transform the pre-concert talk into a meditation and listening workshop. Gorecki’s powerful Symphony no. 3 with soprano Melissa Heath will provide the main sonic exploration of the evening\, a work I have hoped to conduct for a long time. Prepare for a meditative and moving night with the Salt Lake Symphony\, a concert unlike ever you have experienced before! \n\n\n\n\nJean Sibelius: Night Ride and Sunrise\, op. 55\n\n\n\nPhillip Bimstein: “Silence” from Refuge\n\n\n\nG.F. SUMMARY:Musical Latitudes
DESCRIPTION:A sense of place permeates our April program\, featuring a world premiere piece for clarinet and orchestra depicting the mountain bike trails of the region. Laura Grantier\, former principal clarinetist of the U.S. Navy Band\, has commissioned the work from composer Nadine Silverman especially to be premiered with the Salt Lake Symphony. The program opens in another dry climate\, with Maurice Ravel’s depiction of morning in Spain. Alborada del gracioso is known as one of Ravel’s most colorful orchestrations with everything from the expected castanets to a remarkable 24-part division of the string section to achieve the sonic effects of Galician dawn. The program concludes with the powerful Symphonic Dances by Russian composer\, Sergei Rachmaninov\, a work that incorporates the composer’s gift for obsessive melody with his most innovative orchestrations.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare and the Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare has long been as inspiration to all who read\, study\, and perform his works. His exploration of the human condition continues to provide inspiration for artists\, writers\, dancers\, filmmakers\, and composers. In fact\, there is so much classical music inspired by Shakespeare that we could easily do an entire season on just this theme. This concert will also feel different\, with guest actors from the UofU Actor Training Program and SLC’s own Utopia Early Music providing context for the evening of orchestral music inspired by Shakespeare. Prepare yourself to enter another world\, one both unexpected\, yet eerily familiar\, as we feature music inspired by the times and words of the Bard himself. \n\n\n\nProgram: (Shakespearean scenes and musical selections by Utopia Early Music will be interspersed throughout the performance) Felix Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture Antonin Dvorak: Othello Overture William Walton: Death of Falstaff from Henry V Peter Ilyich Tchaikokvsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture Mendelssohn: Wedding March from A Midsummer Night’s Dream

SUMMARY:Return of the Titan!
DESCRIPTION:Some things can be simply described as big. That applies to nearly every work by the great Austrian composer\, Gustav Mahler\, his first attempt at a symphony being no exception. In fact\, he gave his Symphony No. 1 the title “Titan” in some early performances\, a work demonstrating his transformation from a writer of Lieder (song) into fully-fledged symphonies. It is arguably the most impressive first symphony of any composer. The work is tuneful\, and memorable in its message of life\, nature\, and heroic triumph. Perhaps this is why Mahler conducted this symphony more than any other of his compositions. We will contrast this monumental work with the reserved but also deeply felt music of Estonian composer\, Arvo Pärt. His Fratres for Strings and Two Percussionists sets up a reflective mood to transition into the Mahler symphony. All in all\, it’s a great way to launch a season!Program:Arvo Pärt: FratresGustav Mahler\, Symphony No. 1 “Titan”
