SUMMARY:Celebration in Sound
DESCRIPTION:From imitating birds to composing symphonies\, our March concert explores how composers are inspired to create orchestral music. The concert will open with Respighi’s charming suite of music dedicated to our flying friends\, Gli ucelli (The Birds). Inspired by compositions from past centuries\, imitating the calls and activity of birds\, Respighi gives it a updated touch\, using modern orchestral instruments. This delightful suite will be followed by Brahms’s powerful Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. Long haunted by Beethoven’s legacy\, Brahms waited until age 41 to produce this masterpiece\, the first of only four symphonies the composer would produce. It certainly is a work worth waiting for\, with soaring melodies\, tender moments\, and glorious climaxes\, and a perennial orchestra and audience favorite. \n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\n\nOttorino Respighi: Gli ucelli (The Birds)\n\n\n\nJohannes Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C Minor\, Op. 68

SUMMARY:Teachers and Students: Leon Chodos\, contrabassoon\, invited side-by-side high school students
DESCRIPTION:Nearly every musician can point to a teacher who inspired them to keep going and follow their dream. The Salt Lake Symphony is pleased to continue our tradition of inviting talented high school musicians to play alongside us for a piece every year. Young musicians come from a variety of places\, including area youth orchestras\, high schools\, and private studios. This year\, we welcome the students to play Danzon No. 2\, an exciting work by Mexican composer\, Arturo Marquez. Also on the program is a unique first for the SLS\, a Concerto for Contrabassoon and Orchestra by Victor Bruns. We are thrilled to have Utah Symphony contrabassoonist\, Leon Chodos\, joining us as soloist. Leon is a great supporter of our orcheatra and can sometimes be seen volunteering his talents in our bassoon section. The concert will close with a powerful “first symphony”\, a student composition by the great Russian composer\, Dmitri Shostakovich. The Symphony No. 1 was Shostakovich’s graduation piece from his conservatory studies\, launching him into instant fame as a Russian symphonist at age 19. \n\n\n\nProgram: \n\n\n\n\nArturo Marquez: Danzon No. 2 (with invited side-by-side players)\n\n\n\nVictor Bruns: Concerto for Contrabassoon and Orchestra\n\n\n\nDmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 1\, op. 10

SUMMARY:Signature Sounds
DESCRIPTION:Some pieces define composers\, their technique and their sound. The SLS closes it’s 50th Season with a performance of two composers who created works that set their legacy in place. Florence Price’s Mississippi Suite was almost unknown\, however. This was one of many works discovered after the composer’s death\, in an attic\, almost discarded. Luckily for us\, it was saved! The work is 20th Century Americana at its finest\, describing the Mississippi River through the people that lived on its banks\, from Native Americans to settlers\, to the descendants of Black slaves. The journey takes us both through history and time\, culminating with a moving setting of the spiritual\, Deep River. One of classical music’s most enduring works\, Elgar’s Enigma Variations is a look at friendship\, love\, and the human psyche\, through the lens of the composer’s imagination. The great English composer gives us intimate portraits of his friends\, relations\, co-workers\, and fellow musicians\, culminating in a rousing self-portrait of the composer himself\, with an added pipe organ\, for added affect! Join us as we close out our 50th Year of concerts! \n\n\n\nProgram: \n\n\n\n\nFlorence Price: Mississippi River Suite\n\n\n\nEdward Elgar: Enigma Variations\, op. 36
