50 Years and Counting: Celebrate a Half-Century with the SLS!
Saturday September 27 @ 7:30 pm
SLS is pleased to present a pre-concert lecture at 6:15 pm before the concert in room 270.
Join us as we celebrate 50 years of music-making! In 1976, a group of musicians assembled for the first time, under the direction of Jay Welch to simply “read though some music.” Little did they know that that meeting laid the foundation for one of the finest community orchestras in the nation! We celebrate the start of our 50th season with an overture composed specifically for the occasion by Utah composer, Andrew Maxfield. The orchestral showcase continues with two favorites suggested by the orchestra players, Gershwin’s tuneful An American in Paris, and Saint-Saëns powerful Symphony No. 3, also known as the “Organ Symphony.” Local organist, David Fox, joins us from the bench of the Lively-Fulcher organ to open the season with wave after wave of glorious sound!
Program:
- Andrew Maxfield: World Premiere (commissioned to celebrate SLS’s 50th)
- George Gershwin: An American in Paris
- Camille Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, op. 78 “Organ Symphony”
